<p>A Istanbul, dove la libertà è sempre una negoziazione e il corpo non è mai neutro,&nbsp;Chorus of Body&nbsp;dipinge in scala ridotta ciò che altrove viene urlato o censurato. I suoi oli su cartone sono frammenti intimi: corpi maschili senza volto, gesti sospesi, superfici che riflettono e disturbano lo sguardo. Qui l’identità non si dichiara, si contrae. Si trattiene. Resiste.</p>



<p>Nel <a href="https://chorusofbody.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lavoro</a> di Chorus of Body  il corpo diventa un campo di tensione — tra desiderio e controllo, vulnerabilità e potere, piacere e sorveglianza. L’assenza del volto non è una sottrazione, ma una strategia: libera il corpo dal giudizio immediato e lo restituisce come superficie politica, collettiva, instabile. In un contesto in cui i corpi queer sono costantemente etichettati e disciplinati, l’anonimato si trasforma in atto di sfida.</p>

<p>Il sesso attraversa queste immagini senza spettacolarizzarsi. È quotidiano, osservato da vicino, quasi trattenuto. Nato dall’esperienza personale e da una pratica fotografica intima, diventa pittura e linguaggio. Non per provocare, ma per rivelare. Perché, come suggerisce l’artista, il sesso non fa girare il mondo — ma spiega perché si muove in un certo modo.</p>



<p>Guardare le opere di Chorus of Body richiede attenzione. Sono piccole, ma non chiedono distanza. Al contrario, costringono ad avvicinarsi, a restare, a non fuggire. A volte, lo sguardo finisce nel palmo di una mano.</p>

<p><strong>Com’è vivere come artista gay a Istanbul?</strong></p>



<p>Vivere come artista gay a Istanbul significa restare costantemente all’erta. La città è caotica, emotiva, bellissima e violenta allo stesso tempo. Una notte puoi sentirti incredibilmente libero, circondato dalla tua gente, dalla tua comunità, dai tuoi desideri… e il giorno dopo ti vengono ricordati tutti i limiti tracciati attorno al tuo corpo, alla tua voce, alla tua esistenza, attraverso implicazioni politiche. Questa tensione alimenta il mio lavoro. Qui gli istinti di sopravvivenza si apprendono molto presto. </p>



<h4>Istanbul non ti permette mai davvero di rilassarti, ma allo stesso tempo non ti lascia mai smettere di produrre. Siamo come due fratelli: non ti lascia chiudere gli occhi.</h4>

<p><strong>Com’è la comunità LGBTQ+ lì? Ti senti parte di essa?</strong></p>



<p>Ho costruito con molta cura la mia famiglia scelta e per me è fondamentale proteggerla e tenerla stretta. Per questo non sono profondamente inserito in una comunità specifica, ma non direi nemmeno di esserne fuori. Esisto in una zona intermedia: abbastanza vicino da sentirmi connesso, abbastanza distante da poter respirare. Questa distanza mi dà spazio e mi permette di restare più onesto nelle relazioni, sia con gli altri che con me stesso.</p>

<p><strong>Puoi raccontarci qualcosa del corpo maschile senza volto come soggetto della tua arte?</strong></p>



<p>Quando interagiamo con qualcuno, la prima cosa che facciamo è stabilire un contatto visivo. In quel momento entrano già in gioco una serie di assunzioni e pregiudizi, che lo vogliamo o no. Voglio eliminare completamente questo livello e dirigere l’attenzione direttamente sul corpo. </p>



<h4>Il corpo senza volto è una scelta consapevole. Rimuovere il volto sposta il focus dall’identità intesa come qualcosa di fisso o facilmente leggibile, e lo riporta sul corpo come superficie politica. </h4>



<p>In un contesto in cui i corpi queer sono costantemente categorizzati, etichettati e controllati, l’anonimato diventa sia una forma di protezione sia una forma di resistenza. Senza un volto, il corpo rifiuta di essere consumato facilmente o ridotto a una sola storia. Diventa più collettivo, più instabile.</p>

<p><strong>Il volto quindi non è importante, o è più l’azione del corpo? Un po’ come quando, guardando porno, ci si concentra più su una parte del corpo?</strong></p>



<p>Il volto non è mai neutro. Porta con sé codici sociali, aspettative e giudizi immediati. Questo mi interessa meno rispetto a ciò che il corpo sta facendo: come si muove, come trattiene la tensione, come performa.</p>

<p><strong>C’è molto sesso nel tuo lavoro. Quando hai capito di avere il bisogno di mostrare il sesso gay maschile nelle tue opere?</strong></p>



<p>Scattavo moltissime fotografie. Dopo l’inizio della mia relazione, la mia macchina fotografica ha iniziato naturalmente a concentrarsi su di lui e sui momenti che condividevamo. Con il tempo, quelle immagini hanno smesso di essere semplice documentazione e sono diventate una delle principali fonti di ispirazione per i miei dipinti.</p>

<p><strong>Perché hai deciso di lavorare su formati così piccoli?</strong></p>



<p>Mi piace poter cogliere l’intero dipinto in un solo sguardo. Non solo la scala, ma anche la superficie su cui lavoro fa parte di questa esperienza. Dipingo su cartone metallico e, quando guardi l’opera, alcune piccole aree non dipinte riflettono la luce e disturbano leggermente lo sguardo.</p>



<h4>Le immagini in sé mettono già a disagio molte persone, che tendono a distogliere lo sguardo. Con quei riflessi voglio interrompere quella fuga e disturbarli ancora una volta.</h4>

<p><strong>Essendo così esplicito nel tuo lavoro, senti il peso della censura?</strong></p>



<p>Il mio account Instagram è stato più volte minacciato di chiusura. Inoltre, ci sono stati momenti in cui il mio lavoro non è stato accettato in mostre collettive a causa del contenuto. La cosa divertente è che a volte il problema non era nemmeno il contenuto, ma la scala: l’opera veniva considerata troppo piccola. Immagino che la censura non sappia sempre a cosa stia reagendo.</p>



<h4>E poi, onestamente… non avevamo già stabilito che le dimensioni non contano?</h4>

<p><strong>Chi sono i modelli delle tue opere?</strong></p>



<p>Alcuni modelli sono amici, altri provengono da fotografie che scatto io stesso, e a volte contatto persone attraverso i social media. Di solito parto da un concetto e lavoriamo attorno a quello: esplorando insieme le pose oppure chiedendo loro di produrre immagini specificamente per me.</p>

<p>Questo suo modo di vedere l’arte come modo per avere una maggiore consapevolezza e revisione storica della realtà queer. Drew Pettifer lo traduce nel suo <a href="http://www.drewpettifer.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lavoro</a> in modalità archivista cercando di rivendicare storie del passato queer nel nostro presente.</p>



<p>Per Pettifer, è come se la sua verità sia resa accessibile attraverso l&#8217;arte, in un connubio forte con la storia ma soprattutto con l’intimità, l’erotismo maschile e un viscerale legame col desiderio.</p>

<p>Per me l&#8217;arte è un mezzo creativo di comunicazione. È un modo in cui condividiamo con gli altri il modo in cui percepiamo il mondo e offriamo nuovi modi di vedere e comprendere le nostre esperienze.</p>

<p><strong>Solitamente l&#8217;arte nasce da un luogo molto personale all&#8217;interno dell&#8217;artista vorresti parlare del tuo?</strong></p>



<p>Ho iniziato a fare arte nella mia adolescenza quando ho preso in mano per la prima volta una macchina fotografica per scattare foto dei miei amici e del mio ambiente circostante. </p>



<h4>L&#8217;arte per me è sempre stata legata al desiderio. </h4>



<p>Ho iniziato a interessarmi particolarmente alla fotografia quando un ragazzo della mia scuola per cui avevo una cotta ha iniziato a studiarla. Il processo artistico è un modo per incanalare quel desiderio, per reindirizzarlo in qualche modo. Piuttosto che respingere quei sentimenti e negarli, questa energia viene reindirizzata nel processo di creazione artistica. C&#8217;è una politica davvero importante anche in tutto questo; l&#8217;impatto sociale del fare arte che rappresenti le comunità queer è una parte così critica di tutto questo, che mi fa fare quello che faccio. Si tratta di comunicare con il pubblico e aumentare la visibilità.</p>

<p><strong>Mi piace davvero il modo in cui scatti foto di uomini, che esplorando il genere con un occhio così intimo. Che cosa stavi cercando mentre scattavi quelle immagini?</strong></p>



<p>Realizzo questo tipo di lavori da un po&#8217; di tempo ormai e quando ho iniziato ero davvero interessato al modo in cui la fotografia può catturare le persone in modo diverso in base alla loro identità, incluso il loro genere o sessualità. In particolare, la mia pratica ha esplorato i modi in cui le fotografie di giovani uomini differiscono da quelle di donne. </p>



<h4>Penso che le cose stiano mutando un po&#8217; con i cambiamenti sociali e i social media che danno alle persone un maggiore controllo sulla loro rappresentazione. Storicamente gli uomini sono stati in grado di sfidare o resistere al modo in cui la fotografia può oggettivare le persone. </h4>



<p>Il mio lavoro si è concentrato su come possiamo giocare con la tensione tra ciò che potresti chiamare identificazione – i modi in cui possiamo identificarci con il soggetto e vederlo come una persona – e l&#8217;oggettivazione, in cui il soggetto diventa principalmente un oggetto per il nostro sguardo. Trovare questa tensione è stato l&#8217;obiettivo di gran parte di questo lavoro.</p>

<p>Ti dispiace tornare a parlare di quei progetti e vedere quanto quegli sguardi maschili non siano ancora rappresentati o non capiti per la nostra cultura?</p>



<p>Penso che lo sguardo maschile eterosessuale sia ancora il modo dominante di vedere il mondo nella maggior parte delle culture, ma penso che questo stia cambiando. Il mio lavoro è davvero incentrato sullo sguardo maschile queer e su come questo possa sfidare i modi in cui gli uomini spesso riducono al minimo l&#8217;oggettivazione dello sguardo; quando un uomo è oggetto di uno sguardo desideroso, il pubblico deve lavorare di più per dare un senso a un&#8217;immagine. Penso che gran parte della discussione sullo sguardo maschile sia stata polarizzata. </p>



<h4>Alcuni critici hanno affermato che lo sguardo maschile è sempre oggettivante e non può essere affatto contestato, mentre altri hanno affermato che questa posizione nega alle donne e alle persone omosessuali il potere, impedendo loro di avere mai alcun controllo su come interpretano le immagini. </h4>



<p>Direi che ci sono molte forme di spettatori resistenti in cui possiamo sfidare le nostre aspettative sul potere e sull&#8217;aspetto.</p>

<p><strong>Parliamo di Hand in Glove and the Decisive Moment cosa ricordi di quei progetti?</strong></p>



<p>Questi sono due progetti davvero concettuali che ho creato che hanno esaminato il genere, la sessualità, l&#8217;arte e il possesso. Ho prodotto il progetto Hand in Glove per il Center for Contemporary Photography di Melbourne, Australia. In ogni immagine della serie per quel progetto indossavo lo stesso vestito e stavo accanto a un modello maschile nudo nella loro camera da letto. In una mano tengo il cavo di scatto della fotocamera e nell&#8217;altra tengo i genitali del modello. </p>



<p>È stata una riflessione sul potere della fotografia come macchina del desiderio, che cattura le cose che vogliamo conservare e ricordare, e il desiderio sessuale. Quindi in ogni mano ho uno di quegli oggetti del desiderio. Decisive Moment è un&#8217;altra riflessione sulla capacità della fotografia di catturare un soggetto desiderato. </p>



<h4>Per questa serie ho fotografato i volti di giovani uomini mentre raggiungevano l&#8217;orgasmo e li ho esposti insieme a campioni di sperma di quegli stessi soggetti contenuti in un contenitore di pellicola. </h4>



<p>Aveva lo scopo d&#8217;indurre il pubblico a pensare a quale fosse il ritratto più accurato del soggetto: una fotografia del loro viso o un campione di DNA.</p>

<p><strong>Scatti fotografie da più di 20 anni, giusto? Cosa ne pensi dell&#8217;estetica d&#8217;IG in cui tutti possono essere fotografi e mostrano i loro corpi?</strong></p>



<p>È difficile individuare un punto di partenza per me per scattare fotografie, ma se si contano i miei primi lavori durante l&#8217;adolescenza, allora sì, sono passati più di 20 anni. Le mie prime mostre collettive risalgono al 2004, quindi espongo pubblicamente il mio lavoro da quasi 20 anni. I social media, in particolare Instagram, hanno cambiato il modo in cui pensiamo alla fotografia e all&#8217;arte. </p>



<h4>L&#8217;arte e la creatività possono verificarsi ovunque e Instagram ha consentito di condividere alcuni lavori incredibili con un pubblico più ampio. </h4>



<p>Penso che l&#8217;estetica dei social media stia influenzando l&#8217;arte e viceversa. Non sento il bisogno di controllare i confini tra &#8220;arte alta&#8221; e &#8220;arte popolare&#8221; &#8211; ci possono essere lavori interessanti e lavori poco interessanti in entrambi.</p>

<p>I tuoi concetti di sesso<strong> e sessualità sono cambiati nel corso degli anni e da quando hai iniziato?</strong></p>



<p>Sento che più conosci un argomento, più ti rendi conto che ci sono molte cose che non sai. Quando ho iniziato a realizzare opere d&#8217;arte incentrate su concetti come sesso e sessualità, penso di essere stato più rigido nel mio modo di pensare. Più ho lavorato in questo campo, più mi rendo conto che ci sono idee molto più sfumate e complesse che circolano in queste aree. Penso di essere più a mio agio negli ultimi anni a lavorare in contesti più ambigui. </p>



<h4>Penso anche che la nostra comprensione sociale del sesso e della sessualità si sia evoluta negli ultimi due decenni, con approcci più inclusivi al genere e alla sessualità, il che è positivo. </h4>



<p>Spero che le cose continuino a evolversi e il mio lavoro possa continuare a documentare questi cambiamenti.</p>

<p><strong>In uno dei tuoi progetti hai usato un&#8217;app come Tinder per incontrare i ragazzi per i tuoi scatti, com&#8217;è stata quell&#8217;esperienza?</strong></p>



<p>Era per un progetto in una residenza d’arte a Tokyo e trovavo difficile trovare modelli per il mio lavoro. Ho usato un&#8217;app come Tinder per contattare potenziali modelli quando ho esaurito le persone nella mia rete personale. È stata un&#8217;esperienza davvero interessante. Da un lato ha creato un&#8217;incredibile tensione tra me e il modello che penso sia stata catturata nel lavoro. Ho dovuto negoziare attentamente per assicurarmi di essere chiaro che non ero interessato agli appuntamenti.</p>

<p><strong>A cosa stai lavorando ora?</strong></p>



<p>Negli ultimi due anni ho lavorato di più su progetti d&#8217;archivio queer che documentano momenti nascosti della storia queer e li rendono visibili al pubblico attraverso mostre. Una grande mostra personale recente, A Sorrowful Act: The Wreck of the Zeewijk, ad esempio, ha esaminato il primo caso di sodomia documentato in Australia, avvenuto nel 1727. </p>



<p>Due giovani sulla nave olandese Zeewijk furono condannati a morte quando furono giudicati colpevoli di sodomia e furono lasciati a morire su isole separate nell&#8217;Oceano Indiano. Ho trovato i parenti dei due giovani nei Paesi Bassi per filmare il progetto e ho documentato molti dei siti, dei documenti e degli oggetti legati a questa storia. </p>



<p>Altri progetti che utilizzano questa metodologia sono attualmente in corso, incluso uno basato su uno strano bushranger australiano, Captain Moonlite. Sto anche producendo un nuovo libro fotografico che sarà pubblicato nel 2023-2024 incentrato sull&#8217;intimità e sui giovani come soggetti dello sguardo fotografico.</p>

<p>Come artista, quali sono i nuovi artisti che ammiri davvero il loro lavoro e pensi che qualcuno dovrebbe <strong>tenere d&#8217;occhio?</strong></p>



<p>Ci sono così tanti fantastici nuovi artisti nel mondo in questo momento &#8211; potrei elencarne così tanti! In termini di artisti australiani che stanno conquistando un pubblico internazionale, penso che Hoda Afshar stia facendo cose incredibili. Hoda è un artista e fotografo iraniano-australiano il cui lavoro esplora la rappresentazione, il genere e lo spostamento. </p>



<p>Mi piace molto anche il lavoro di Atong Atem, un altro artista che usa la fotografia e il video per esplorare il genere e la rappresentazione. Usa la sua arte come veicolo per condividere storie di migranti e pratiche post coloniali nella diaspora africana in Australia.</p>



<p> È un lavoro incredibilmente vivace e coinvolgente. Infine, Paul Yore sta realizzando un lavoro davvero accattivante su queerness, politica sociale e cultura contemporanea. Attualmente ha una grande mostra personale presso l&#8217;Australian Center for Contemporary Art che è una cacofonia immersione d&#8217;immagini e testo.</p>

<p><strong>Cosa trovi interessante nel corpo maschile?</strong></p>



<p>Mi identifico come un uomo omosessuale, quindi sono personalmente attratto fisicamente dal corpo maschile. La cosa che mi affascina davvero in questo momento è il modo in cui alcuni giovani uomini attualmente comprendono la loro sessualità e genere, e la tensione tra i tratti tradizionali maschili e femminili.</p>

<p>Quanto pensi sia cambiata la rappresentazione del corpo umano nella nostra cultura da quando hai iniziato a<strong> fotografare gli uomini?</strong></p>



<p>Ho scritto un capitolo del mio dottorato su questo argomento, quindi potrei dire molto! Penso che ci siano stati grandi cambiamenti dagli anni &#8217;90 nel modo in cui il corpo maschile è rappresentato.</p>



<p><strong>I giovani in particolare sono spesso presentati in modi più femminili e alla mano di quanto avrebbero potuto essere tradizionalmente in passato. </strong></p>



<p>Tuttavia, suppongo che la recente controversia sugli abiti di Harry Styles mi fa capire che c&#8217;è una vera polarizzazione attorno alle aspettative della mascolinità oggi. Mi chiedo se potremmo assistere a un contraccolpo ai molti cambiamenti avvenuti negli ultimi anni. L&#8217;arte e la fotografia giocheranno senza dubbio un ruolo importante nel documentare i cambiamenti che si verificano e nell&#8217;offrire modi alternativi di pensare alla mascolinità e al corpo maschile.</p>
