<p>Eye Contact, è il nuovo progetto di Karlo Martinez, è un libro che parla proprio della fragile potenza del vedere e dell’essere visti. C’è un momento, prima che due corpi si sfiorino, in cui tutto accade nello sguardo. È lì che nasce l’intimità — in quel gesto invisibile che unisce distanza e desiderio, realtà e immaginazione.</p>



<p>Conosciamo <a href="https://www.instagram.com/karlomartinezg/?hl=it" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karlo</a> da anni, dai <a href="https://toh-magazine.com/2021/11/smut-e-una-visione-artistica-senza-censure/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tempi</a> in cui il suo lavoro abitava gli spazi digitali di TOH! e di Tumblr, tra autoritratti, corpi catturati dalla luce dello schermo, e una ricerca costante di verità nel frammento. Oggi, quella stessa ricerca si fa più matura, più dolente, ma anche più libera.</p>



<p>In Eye Contact Karlo Martinez raccoglie immagini personali e frammenti trovati, desideri congelati nei pixel e memorie analogiche di un’era che non esiste più. È un diario visivo che non racconta una storia, ma uno stato d’animo: il momento in cui la pelle si trasforma in superficie di memoria, e il collage diventa un modo per mettere ordine nel caos del desiderio.</p>

<p>Alla fine Karlo con questo lavoro ci invita a osservare, a ricordare, e forse anche a riconoscerci in quella fragile tensione tra visione e desiderio. Eye Contact è un esercizio di sguardo — verso l’altro e verso sé stessi — in cui ogni taglio, ogni gesto, diventa un atto di intimità condivisa.</p>

<p><strong>Quando ci siamo incontrati per la prima volta ai tempi di TOH!, il tuo lavoro ruotava già intorno ai temi dell’intimità e dell’identità. Guardandoti oggi, quanto senti di essere cambiato — come artista e come persona?</strong></p>



<p>Molto. Penso che la prima volta che ci siamo messi in contatto fosse nel 2016 o 2017, per un articolo su TOH! Sono passati quasi dieci anni, ed era un periodo in cui stavo davvero esplorando la mia sessualità attraverso piattaforme come Tumblr, pubblicando autoritratti e video, e godendo della libertà che offriva allora. Mi manca molto! </p>



<h4>Allo stesso tempo, usavo Instagram in modo molto più intenso rispetto a oggi, come mezzo per entrare in contatto e collaborare con fotografi e artisti, continuando così la mia esplorazione. </h4>



<p>So che tutto questo può sembrare narcisistico, ma in quel periodo stavo davvero imparando a vivere la mia sessualità e a liberarmi del senso di colpa e delle inibizioni con cui ero cresciuto in una famiglia cattolica devota. Poi, nel 2019 e durante il COVID, mi sono avvicinato al collage. Guardando indietro, sono state tutte fasi necessarie per crescere come persona.</p>

<p><strong>Eye Contact sembra una sorta di autoritratto collettivo, una tensione tra sé e gli altri, tra desiderio e memoria. Quando hai capito che questo progetto sarebbe diventato un libro, invece che una mostra o una serie di collage indipendenti?</strong></p>



<p>Eye Contact è stato in realtà il primo progetto su cui ho lavorato così a lungo — un anno e mezzo, per la precisione! È nato in modo molto lento e organico. Sapevo di avere un’enorme libreria di immagini sul mio telefono, accumulate negli ultimi tre anni: dettagli quotidiani o estetici che attiravano la mia attenzione. E sapevo anche di voler tornare alla mia pratica del collage, utilizzando immagini omoerotiche trovate, come avevo fatto negli anni precedenti.</p>

<p>Erano passati tre anni dai miei ultimi collage e dalla mia ultima zine, Hole Out for the Boys; nel frattempo mi ero trasferito da Melbourne a Parigi e avevo vissuto grandi cambiamenti nella mia vita personale. Mi è sembrato il momento giusto per mettere tutto sul tavolo e creare qualcosa di nuovo. C’erano tante idee e tante immagini: l’idea di un libro aveva perfettamente senso.</p>

<p><strong>Le immagini tratte da video porno dei primi anni 2000 e quelle scattate con il tuo telefono coesistono nello stesso spazio. Cosa ti attrae di questa sovrapposizione di temporalità e dispositivi diversi?</strong></p>



<p>Guardare la libreria di immagini del mio telefono mi ha ricordato quando, nel 2013, aprii per la prima volta un account Instagram dedicato solo a foto di architettura e paesaggi urbani — niente a che vedere con quello che poi ho fatto su Tumblr o Twitter negli anni successivi. Penso che, essendo architetto, siano cose su cui mi concentro naturalmente, fin da bambino. Allo stesso tempo, sapevo anche di voler tornare alla pratica del collage e di voler esplorare ancora una volta le immagini omoerotiche trovate, come avevo fatto negli ultimi anni.</p>

<p><strong>C’è una precisione quasi chirurgica nel modo in cui tagli e ricomponi le immagini. Il collage, per te, è un gesto di controllo o un modo per perdere il controllo sull’immagine?</strong></p>



<p>Direi che è un gesto di controllo, nel senso che prendo qualcosa di preesistente e usa-e-getta e ne metto in evidenza con attenzione un dettaglio o un gesto specifico.</p>

<p><strong>La fisicità del libro sembra fondamentale. Come hai pensato agli aspetti materiali di Eye Contact — la carta, il formato, il ritmo delle pagine — in relazione al contenuto?</strong></p>



<p>Per quanto riguarda la carta e il formato, devo dare credito all’editore, Collapse Books. Abbiamo scelto una finitura lucida per la copertina, per evocare il riflesso dello schermo di un telefono. Quanto al ritmo delle pagine, volevo che il libro avesse un flusso naturale e una sorta di narrazione libera, che si muovesse da un’atmosfera o ambientazione all’altra. Desideravo che ci fosse un pensiero dietro, e non solo una raccolta casuale di immagini.</p>

<p>Il concetto di fondo è quello di un weekend: dal venerdì mattina, quando ci si sveglia e si va al lavoro, fino alla domenica sera. Anche se non va preso troppo alla lettera.</p>



<p><strong>Il titolo parla di “Eye Contact”, un momento che può significare desiderio, minaccia o empatia. Cosa significa per te oggi guardare — ed essere guardato?</strong></p>



<p>Il contatto visivo ha per me un significato enorme. Il contatto visivo quando parli con qualcuno, quando ti concentri su qualcosa, quando guardi uno schermo, o quando fai sesso. È dare tutta la tua attenzione a qualcosa, concentrare completamente lo sguardo sull’oggetto del tuo desiderio, su ciò che cattura la tua attenzione, su ciò che ti dà piacere.</p>

<p><strong>Molte delle tue immagini nascono dalle prime estetiche digitali — Tumblr, webcam, forum online. Pensi che quella cultura influenzi ancora oggi la nostra sensibilità visiva?</strong></p>



<p>Assolutamente. Quando ho iniziato a riflettere su cosa volessi fare dopo, continuavo a pensare all’attuale fascinazione per la nostalgia: gli anni ’90, i 2000, gli anniversari e i reboot. Ho notato anche l’attenzione e l’apprezzamento per le estetiche e le pubblicazioni gay vintage degli anni ’70 e ’80.</p>

<p>Così ho pensato: e l’inizio dell’era digitale? La mia prima esposizione al sesso gay è avvenuta online, con un video porno nel 2009. Ricordo perfettamente quel momento e il video esatto. Poi è arrivata l’era d’oro di Tumblr, a metà degli anni 2010, qualcosa che ho vissuto e a cui ho partecipato in prima persona. Volevo rendere omaggio a tutto questo.</p>

<h4>SMUT è un collettivo artistico formato da Dylan Kelleher, J Davies e Karlo Martinez. Non è solo una rivendicazione e una rivolta contro la continua censura della società sui corpi e sulla sessualità queer.</h4>



<p>SMUT rappresenta l&#8217;esplorazione collaborativa e individuale che i tre artisti hanno hanno stabilito con uno studio coeso sull&#8217;omoerotismo contemporaneo, sull&#8217;intimità queer e sull&#8217;estetica.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Utilizzando i vari processi fotografici, gli artisti indagano giocosamente i temi del voyeurismo e dell’esibizionismo, vedere ed essere visti, che spesso è incorporato nel loro lavoro, sovvertendo il ruolo del pubblico e offrendo narrazioni personali all&#8217;interno delle loro pratiche individuali.</p>

<p>La raccolta dei lavori di SMUT in mostra dal 19 al 25 Novembre presso OIGÅLL PROJECTS al 122 Gertrude st, Fitzroy, diventa lo spazio per voci e visioni queer ribelli che echeggiano ad alta voce, spudoratamente e senza scuse.</p>

<h4>“La mia fotografia è in costante evoluzione del sé nel tempo e attualmente si pone come un&#8217;esplorazione della sessualità e dell&#8217;empowerment del corpo. Il mio obiettivo è quello di ritrarre un ritratto seducente e impenitente della mia vita e dei miei fascini in una meravigliosa dicotomia sessuale e non sessuale&#8221;.</h4>

<p><a href="http://www.dylankelleher.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dylan Kelleher </a>(nato nel 1988) è un designer-fotografo con sede a Melbourne, Naarm, e ha una formazione in interior design e architettura. La sua creatività e il suo amore per la fotografia nascono fin dalla tenera età attraverso un&#8217;appassionata documentazione fotografica.</p>

<p>Laureato in architettura nel 2015, <a href="http://@dylanjkelleher" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kelleher</a> esplora il design attraverso la sua fotografia. Capire e giocare con lo spazio (e tempo), la luce e l&#8217;ombra sono state fondamentali nel suo processo di sviluppo.</p>



<p>La fotografia di Kelleher presenta spesso il corpo nudo, fondendo idee di desiderio sessuale, voyeurismo e omoerotismo con contenuti &#8220;impuri&#8221;, in faccia.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.karlomartinez.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Karlo Martinez</a> è nato e cresciuto a Monterrey, in Messico, si è trasferito in Australia nel 2011 per perseguire una carriera in architettura ed esplorare la sua sessualità lontano da un&#8217;educazione cattolica e dall&#8217;esame della città natale. A Melbourne, accanto agli studi e al lavoro in architettura, un tumultuoso percorso di scoperta sessuale ha portato alla sperimentazione artistica, culminata nel collage all&#8217;inizio del 2019.</p>

<p>Mescolando l&#8217;autoritratto omoerotico e le appropriazioni con una sobria sensibilità architettonica, il lavoro di <a href="http://@karlomrtnzg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Martinez</a> comprende una raccolta di storie e fantasie erotiche, ritratte attraverso un &#8220;alter ego ipersessualizzato&#8221;. Così facendo, il suo lavoro mette in luce il conflitto interno tra il perseguimento dei propri interessi artistici e una radicata responsabilità verso uno stile di vita convenzionale. Imperturbabile, Martinez possiede completamente il suo corpo e i suoi desideri attraverso le sue opere d’arte.</p>

<p><strong>SMUT è una rivolta contro la censura che è in corso da parte della società dei corpi queer e della sessualità. Quanto hai sentito il peso della censura di Instagram sul tuo lavoro di artista?</strong></p>



<p><strong>J</strong>: Recentemente ho iniziato il mio undicesimo account Instagram. Sono stati chiusi dieci account per colpa della censura oppressiva di voci e corpi queer. Anche quando il mio lavoro non viene segnalato per i peli pubici o due persone queer che si baciano, ricevo messaggi odiosi e commenti spregiativi. Passo molto tempo a rimuovere questi commenti e bloccare gli account abusivi in modo che le persone con cui sto collaborando non siano esposte alla queerfobia. Anche se estenuante e spesso demotivante, coltivare uno spazio sicuro per me, la mia famiglia e i miei amici, per esistere in maniera autentica è parte integrante della mia arte. </p>



<h4>È un peccato che la censura militante di Instagram non protegga le persone queer nel modo in cui ci castiga.</h4>



<p><strong>Karlo</strong>: È una specie di male necessario. Instagram mi ha fornito un&#8217;esposizione incredibile e ho creato connessioni che non avrei mai sognato di fare. Tuttavia, è anche incredibilmente restrittivo e devi tenere a mente che il tuo lavoro o il tuo account possono essere cancellati in qualsiasi momento se qualcosa viene percepito come contrario alle &#8220;linee guida della comunità&#8221;. Per me, dopo aver perso il mio ultimo account con 12k follower, è stato incredibilmente difficile ricominciare da capo, ma penso di affrontarlo in un modo diverso ora, stando più attento a ciò che condivido e non prendere tutto troppo seriamente.</p>

<p><strong>Viviamo in un&#8217;epoca in cui siamo tutti voyeur. A tutti noi piace vedere ed essere visti. Quali sono i tuoi pensieri o punti di vista su questo?</strong></p>



<p><strong>J</strong>: Penso che ci sia un elemento voyeuristico nel mio lavoro e anche un aspetto esibizionista. Sentirsi sexy e al sicuro davanti alla macchina fotografica è un&#8217;esperienza molto liberatoria, per me e per le persone con cui collaboro. Quando i momenti intimi sono condivisi consensualmente si abbattono le barriere di vergogna e stigma associati al sesso. La mia pratica artistica è guidata da una curiosità insaziabile; un bisogno di imparare e capire l&#8217;esistenza queer. Sono sempre stat* un* student* visiv*.</p>



<p><strong>Karlo</strong>: Penso che sia solo natura umana, e i social media l&#8217;abbiano esacerbato. Penso che a tutti noi piaccia vedere dentro le finestre degli altri, vogliamo sapere cosa stanno facendo gli altri o com&#8217;è la loro vita. Ci confrontiamo con gli altri, sia consciamente che inconsciamente. Forse SMUT si concentra di più sull&#8217;aspetto sessuale.</p>

<p><strong>Come queers, siamo spesso etichettati come spudorati o impenitenti. Sei mai stato frainteso a causa della tua apertura? O non preso sul serio a causa dell&#8217;argomento che esplori nel tuo lavoro?</strong></p>



<p><strong>J</strong>: Il mio lavoro è spesso accolto con critiche ristrette da parte di un pubblico eteronormativo. Sto esplorando l&#8217;intimità per abbattere lo stigma che lo circonda per me stess* e per chiunque altro trovi conforto e sollievo nel mio lavoro. Mi rattrista che alcune persone trovino la mia apertura minacciosa e sentano il bisogno di svalutare la mia arte, ma alla fine la mia apertura è ciò che mi ha permesso di formare connessioni così speciali con i miei collaboratori. È ciò che continua a permettermi di imparare cose nuove da nuove persone.</p>



<p><strong>Karlo</strong>: Assolutamente, penso che l&#8217;argomento che trattiamo spesso non sia preso sul serio o visto come sporco o tabù, anche al giorno d&#8217;oggi. Mi sento spesso frainteso dal modo in cui scelgo di esprimermi e da come uso il mio corpo nudo come tela. Spesso trovo difficile per le persone capire che ciò che esprimo attraverso la mia arte è solo una piccola parte ribelle di me, non definisce tutto di me. Ci sono molti altri aspetti di me come persona, accade solo che mi sento molto a mio agio ad esprimere la mia sessualità usando il mio corpo nudo.</p>

<p><strong>Il vostro collettivo può essere considerato come una ribellione artistica?</strong></p>



<p><strong>J</strong>: Assolutamente. Come persona visibilmente queer che vive al di fuori del binarismo di genere, la mia esistenza in sé è un atto di ribellione. Credo che il mio lavoro sia un&#8217;estensione di me stess* e delle persone queer vicine a me. Collettivamente, SMUT ha stabilito le nostre piattaforme per celebrare noi stessi, i nostri corpi e la nostra intimità al di fuori degli spazi eteronormativi. I nostri continui sforzi per ricostruire le nostre piattaforme digitali sono un altro esempio della nostra ribellione in corso, un atto di sfida in un mondo digitale contemporaneo in cui le nostre voci sono continuamente censurate.</p>



<p><strong>Karlo</strong>: Sicuramente. Ribellarsi contro la crescente censura nell&#8217;era digitale e nelle opinioni puritaniche omofobe della società.</p>

<p><strong>Vi occupate tutti del corpo e della sessualità. Puoi parlare delle tue opinioni a riguardo?</strong></p>



<p><strong>J</strong>: Ho sempre avuto un fascino per la complessità dei corpi e le nostre relazioni con loro. Ero sempre molto consapevole di me stess*, preoccupat* che il mio corpo non fosse lo stesso degli altri, preoccupat* che anche il mio cervello non funzionasse allo stesso modo degli altri. Nel corso del tempo mi sono res* conto che queste erano ansie comuni condivise tra così tante persone queer che non si erano mai viste rappresentate nei media. Inizialmente ho esplorato i corpi attraverso la fotografia come mezzo per disimballare le mie insicurezze, per conoscere i corpi degli altri e come si vedono. La mia prospettiva sui corpi e la sessualità si espande sempre con ogni nuova collaborazione, con ogni nuova relazione, con ogni nuova forma di intimità.</p>



<p><strong>Karlo</strong>: Penso che non ci sia niente di più naturale del corpo umano e del comportamento umano. Siamo tutti esseri sessuali in una certa misura. </p>



<h4>È ridicolo che, anche nel 2021, la sessualità umana sia ancora un argomento così proibito da esplorare per molte persone.</h4>
