<h2 class="wp-block-heading">In un panorama artistico che oscilla tra intimità brutale e costruzione dell’immagine, Nathaniel Ivy emerge come una delle voci più lucide e vulnerabili della sua generazione.</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">La pittura di Nathaniel Ivy non racconta storie: le espone. Corpi maschili, desiderio queer, momenti che normalmente restano a porte chiuse vengono portati sulla tela con una chiarezza disarmante, dove l’erotismo non è mai decorativo ma profondamente incarnato.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Lavorando con la figurazione, Ivy usa la mascolinità come linguaggio visivo e politico — piegandola, rendendola permeabile, lasciandola scoperta. Nei suoi dipinti, l’intimità è sempre attraversata da una tensione sottile tra controllo e vulnerabilità: lo sguardo diretto delle figure, il corpo come superficie esposta e dettagli ricorrenti — come i calzini bianchi Nike, segno ironico e feticcio quotidiano — trasformano lo spettatore da osservatore a presenza coinvolta.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tra riferimenti alla pornografia, alla cultura digitale e all’immaginario maschile contemporaneo, il suo lavoro si muove sul confine instabile tra performance e verità, interrogando il modo in cui il desiderio viene costruito, mostrato e vissuto oggi.<br>Appena uscito dall’università, Nathaniel Ivy dipinge il piacere come uno spazio lento, intimo e inevitabilmente politico — un luogo in cui il corpo non chiede permesso e l’immagine diventa atto.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Quando qualcuno guarda il tuo lavoro, che cosa speri che non capisca immediatamente di te?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">È una domanda difficile per me: quasi spero che non sappiano nulla di me finché non decidono di cercarlo. Il mio pubblico è in gran parte queer, quindi spero che, guardando il mio lavoro, possano vedere un’estensione di se stessi o sentirsi visti attraverso le proprie esperienze. Ma forse non voglio che sappiano che, in fondo, sono un “theatre kid” e che probabilmente stavo ascoltando un nuovo cast album mentre dipingevo scene così esplicite.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Ti definisci un artista queer o un artista che usa la queerness come materiale visivo e politico?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mi definisco decisamente un artista queer, ed è qualcosa in cui sono cresciuto molto mentre studiavo arte alla Miami University. Sono entrato all’università sapendo di voler lavorare direttamente con la figura umana e, da uomo queer, ho sempre trovato la forma maschile bellissima. </p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Col tempo sono arrivato a usare direttamente nel mio lavoro il mio punto di vista queer sull’intimità e sull’autoerotismo. Nell’ultimo anno ho sentito il mio lavoro diventare più politico, per quello che è, a causa dell’attuale amministrazione negli Stati Uniti. </h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Questo mi ha sicuramente spinto a dipingere di più e a condividere di più: non desidero essere messo a tacere.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Il tuo corpo — o i corpi che lo rappresentano — è spesso al centro della scena. È uno spazio di controllo, esposizione o vulnerabilità?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I corpi nel mio lavoro sono sicuramente in uno spazio di esposizione o vulnerabilità. I momenti che rappresento di solito avvengono a porte chiuse e trovo che passare tempo a dipingerli sia molto vulnerabile e renda visibili queste azioni intime. </p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Mi piace anche far sentire lo spettatore incluso nell’attività, attraverso elementi come il contatto visivo o una composizione in primo piano che sembra quasi “saltare addosso” a chi guarda. </h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Questa interazione sposta quasi il controllo nel dipinto e trasferisce la vulnerabilità sullo spettatore e sui suoi desideri.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>I calzini in spugna Nike ricorrono come un segno quasi ossessivo. Sono un feticcio, un’icona di classe o un modo per rendere il desiderio immediatamente leggibile?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I calzini Nike nel mio lavoro compaiono già nel 2022 con un progetto di fotorealismo intitolato <em>Masquerade</em>. Questo dipinto esplora la mia visione della mascolinità attraverso una maschera flamboyant al centro della composizione, circondata da oggetti che consideravo maschili: una banana infilata in una scarpa, una bottiglia di birra vuota e dei calzini Nike. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Il tema della mascolinità è riemerso nel 2023 in un dipinto chiamato <em>No Cold Feet</em>, dove il titolo stesso fa riferimento ai calzini indossati dalle figure. </p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Inizialmente erano calzini generici, ma il mio professore mise in discussione il genere della figura che stava assumendo il ruolo passivo; in qualche modo, l’aggiunta dello swoosh Nike sui calzini rese assolutamente chiaro che si trattava di un momento intimo tra due uomini.</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">L’aggiunta dei calzini è anche legata all’umorismo da spogliatoio del tipo “non è gay se tieni i calzini”, e volevo appropriarmi di quella battuta. Col tempo ho imparato ad amare il processo di resa pittorica dei calzini insieme ai corpi nudi: adoro il contrasto tra il tessuto morbido e la carne.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Quanto è importante il piacere personale nel tuo processo creativo? Crei per eccitarti, per provocare o per prendere distanza da ciò che desideri?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I miei dipinti, pur essendo intrinsecamente sessuali, mi appagano in modo molto più profondo. Creo l’arte che ho sempre desiderato vedere, quindi mi sento realizzato quando un’opera arriva a compimento. Nulla mi dà più soddisfazione di un dipinto finito. Amo studiare i miei lavori dopo: guardarli da diverse angolazioni, persino tenerli davanti a uno specchio per vederne una versione completamente ribaltata. Il desiderio sessuale viene meno e tutto ciò che vedo è un’opera che sono felice di aver creato.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Nel tuo lavoro c’è sempre una tensione tra intimità e posa. Dove finisce la performance e dove inizia la verità?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Penso che la posa sia molto importante nel mio lavoro. A volte una figura o una foto mi colpiscono in modo tale da attrarmi esteticamente e soddisfare il mio desiderio di iniziare un nuovo dipinto. </p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Prendo riferimenti dalla pornografia e dai social media, che di per sé sono già una forma di performance. È qualcosa che mi interrogo spesso vivendo in un’epoca dominata dai social e crescendo con una costante interazione con essi: dov’è il confine tra performance e verità?</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Esploro questo tema nel dipinto <em>Reminisce</em>, dove un autoritratto si intreccia con un’immagine intima: la verità si trova nel mio passato e nelle mie esperienze sessuali, ma l’immaginario è appropriato dalla pornografia.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Instagram è semplicemente un archivio o una parte integrante del lavoro? Ti senti più libero o più esposto lì?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Onestamente, Instagram per me è una sorta di trampolino di lancio. Sono appena uscito dall’università e sto cercando di far circolare il mio nome, quindi i social media mi sembrano un passo naturale. C’è sempre il timore che lavori come i miei vengano rimossi o censurati, ma questo rende ancora più importante, per me, condividerli.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Molti dei tuoi riferimenti sembrano provenire dalla cultura maschile contemporanea — sport, streetwear, codici di virilità. Ti interessa smontarli o appropriartene?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I miei riferimenti sono decisamente un’appropriazione di immagini provenienti dalla cultura queer online. Alcune immagini mi “grattano” dentro qualcosa e sento il bisogno di dipingerle. Uso anche immagini tratte dalla pornografia: faccio screenshot e le ritaglio in modi che le rendano più vaghe o più esplicite, oppure sovrappongo selfie statici da Instagram a immagini pornografiche. Trovo questa interazione molto interessante: mi piace il tira e molla tra il sesso e un semplice selfie.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>In passato ho persino utilizzato pubblicità prese da siti porno e messaggi di app di incontri direttamente nei miei lavori. Mi sembrano aggiunte divertenti nel processo di stratificazione, perché mettono in contrasto le figure con il testo ma allo stesso tempo sono profondamente legate alla cultura queer online, un territorio che vorrei esplorare ancora di più in futuro.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Il feticismo nel tuo lavoro è mai nostalgico? O è sempre qualcosa di presente, urgente, quasi compulsivo?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Penso che il mio lavoro sia il risultato di una sessualità repressa. Di recente ho giocato con la nostalgia in un’opera chiamata <em>Action Figure</em>, in cui compare un G.I. Joe con caratteristiche umanizzate come peli corporei, capezzoli, piercing, calzini e un pene. </p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Questo dipinto esplora il gioco nell’infanzia queer e il fatto che non mi fosse permesso avere bambole Barbie, quindi mi venivano dati oggetti considerati maschili. Per curiosità, però, feci baciare due G.I. Joe e qualcosa scattò dentro di me.</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sono cresciuto in un contesto religioso e ho provato a lungo a “pregare via” l’omosessualità — ovviamente senza successo. Alla fine ho imparato ad amare ogni parte di me e non provo rancore verso la religione, ma oggi mi sento così aperto in ogni aspetto della sessualità da non voler annacquare ciò che sento di dover creare.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Ti avvicini al tuo lavoro più come a un processo di costruzione o come a qualcosa che si rivela nel tempo?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dipende molto dal fatto che stia lavorando con un’unica reference o con più immagini. Se ho l’intenzione di stratificare più figure, è un processo che si rivela nel tempo, con felici incidenti, e cerco di non essere troppo prezioso o rigido. Se invece lavoro su una singola reference, il processo è piuttosto lineare: griglia, disegno/sottopittura e poi resa finale. Mi piacciono molto entrambi i processi.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>C’è qualcosa che non mostreresti mai nel tuo lavoro, anche se fa parte di te?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Non credo che riuscirei mai a dipingere immagini del mio corpo completamente nudo o me stesso in atti sessuali: sarebbe troppo personale. Preferisco esplorare quelle idee e le mie esperienze attraverso metafore e immagini che già esistono su internet.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Che cosa ti permettono di esplorare queste immagini che non potresti raggiungere in nessun altro modo?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sedermi davanti a immagini così intime e creare qualcosa di lento e altrettanto intimo per me è quasi magico. Amo stare dentro questi momenti e portare attenzione a forme maschili nel piacere che probabilmente verrebbero ignorate. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mi affascinano anche le domande che il mio lavoro solleva in me stesso: perché mi sento attratto dal rappresentare queste azioni sessuali e in che modo la cultura online — social media, pornografia, hook-up culture — influisce sulle comunità queer. Sono molto curioso di vedere dove mi porteranno queste domande e come si svilupperà il mio lavoro nel corso della mia carriera artistica.</p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Tomás de Castro Neves esprime la purezza della sensualità negli uomini, lontana da ogni tipo di mascolinità tossica.</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tomás è portoghese, ama la sua terra calda e ricca di tradizioni. Le sue figure dai colori che ricordano gli azulejos rappresentano uomini in movimento, intrecciati tra loro o illustrati singolarmente ma sempre nell’atto di far qualcosa. Una danza di corpi <a href="https://toh-magazine.com/2020/11/art-henry-miller-gallery/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">maschili</a>, carichi di sessualità data dalla struttura massiccia del corpo. Tomás con la sua arte innesca a chi osserva la voglia di libertà. Libertà da ogni tipo di gabbia sia fisica che psichica come le sue figure, lineari su sfondi semplici che creano un immaginario minimal, puro.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Blu e bianco, perché questi due colori predominano nella tua arte?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">È successo per caso, mentre cercavo di scoprire il modo migliore per esprimere l&#8217;emozione di alcuni disegni. Quando me ne sono accorto, il blu ha preso il sopravvento ed è diventato il colore principale che uso. È un colore che dà un senso d’intimità e vulnerabilità, ma allo stesso tempo è orgoglioso e non discreto. Inoltre, stabilisce un rapporto tradizionale con la mascolinità che io cerco di sfidare.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Ci parli un po&#8217; di te?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sono un artista e architetto di 27 anni, nato in Portogallo. Disegno da quando ho memoria e ora sono felice di vedere che la mia arte mi sta portando in tanti posti. Amo quello che faccio e avere la possibilità di trovare persone che si relazionano con la mia arte e che investono su di me è fantastico.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Qual è il tuo bisogno più grande?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Il mio bisogno più grande è quello di esprimere ciò che sento e di avere il tempo di esplorarlo. Può sembrare banale, ma è importante per qualsiasi artista. Ho bisogno di tempo per capire cosa sto provando e per capire in che modo si riempirà la tela. La maggior parte delle volte, però, accade il contrario: lo metti sulla tela e poi inizi a capire da dove proviene, con analogie e con il processo creativo surrealista.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Può essere chiunque. Non penso a chi sia quella figura: in un certo senso, quella figura è un concetto. In quanto concetto, può essere portatore di simbolismi che sono soggettivi per gli spettatori.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Quanto è importante per te la forma?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">La forma mi aiuta a trasportare le persone nella mia realtà. È essenziale, è la traduzione diretta del mio lavoro. Anche se le mie opere sono molto bidimensionali e in uno spazio vuoto astratto, la distorsione volumetrica delle figure è l&#8217;espressione principale della mia pratica.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>I tuoi uomini sembrano spesso ballare, è così?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nonostante non disegni con questa intenzione, molti lo dicono e io lo adoro! Credo che il tipo di contorsione a cui sottopongo le mie figure abbia molte analogie con la danza contemporanea. Per me il disegno è movimento, proprio come la danza.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Quanto ti senti portoghese?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Il Portogallo è la mia casa, le mie radici. È dove ho scelto di stare adesso, ma non escludo l&#8217;idea di vivere in altri Paesi.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>L&#8217;arte che crei&nbsp;è apprezzata nel tuo Paese?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Credo di sì. Anche se ho iniziato a condividere il mio lavoro solo di recente, ho avuto buone opportunità di mostrare la mia arte. Tuttavia, la maggior parte dei miei seguaci e collezionisti non sono portoghesi.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Cosa rappresenta l&#8217;uomo per te?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Per cominciare, l&#8217;uomo è solo un contenitore, una figura che esprime qualcosa. Gli uomini che disegno celebrano le espressioni di genere e decostruiscono la mascolinità in un modo che considero sano, non tossico, bello e necessario. Più che un genere, è un corpo.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Che cosa è essenziale per te?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">La pace della mente e il tempo. Detto questo, penso che continuerò a creare.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Come definiresti il tuo modo di creare?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ho bisogno di tempo, per pensare, non fare nulla e fissare una pagina bianca. In qualche modo, qualcosa verrà fuori. Faccio molti schizzi e quando penso che possa esserci qualcosa di buono, lo provo su una tela. È un processo che non riesco ancora a comprendere appieno, perché lascio andare il controllo in così tanti modi diversi che la maggior parte delle volte il risultato finale mi sorprende. In altre rare occasioni, un&#8217;immagine molto chiara mi viene in mente in modo casuale e mi rimane impressa per giorni o settimane, finché non trovo il tempo e lo spazio per materializzarla.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Dal&nbsp;<a href="https://toh-magazine.com/2020/11/alessandro-michele-gucci-fest-review/">Guccifest</a>&nbsp;in veste d’attrice, al suo esordio discografico &#8220;Collapsed In&nbsp;Sunbeams&#8221; che ha vinto il Mercury Music Prize 2021. Si dice che Arlo Parks, londinese di Hammersmith,&nbsp;<a href="https://toh-magazine.com/2021/01/album-2021-toh-magazine-music/">sarà tra le rivelazioni dell’anno</a>. Lo penso anche io e ne sono ancor più convinto dopo averla intervistata.</strong></h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Canzoni come poesie, sussurrate, intime e scritte col cuore a mente libera, con una delicatezza che non si sentiva da tempo nel pop. Da un po’ si parla di Arlo Parks, da quando nel 2018 uscì il suo primo brano Cola, con cui attirò subito l’attenzione.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A questo aggiungiamoci il suo carattere deciso, la sua bisessualità dichiarata, e il suo essere cool senza nessuno sforzo. Non ha caso è stata voluta da&nbsp;<a href="https://toh-magazine.com/2020/11/alessandro-michele-gucci-fest-review/">Alessandro Michele in un episodio del Guccifest</a>&nbsp;e poi in veste di regista per un corto della sua maison. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Credo che dualità sia la parola che ha più accompagnato questa intervista con Voodoo Kid: il bene e il male, maschio e femmina neutralmente racchiusi nella parola Kid e testi che immortalano un malessere molto personale</strong>&nbsp;e la voglia sia di accoglierlo che di evaderlo<strong>.<em>&nbsp;Amor, Requiem</em>&nbsp;è stato sicuramente uno dei dischi italiani del 2020, quindi se non conoscete Voodoo Kid correte a rimediare.&nbsp;</strong></p>
