In questa serie sarà l&#8217;intelligenza artificiale che consente all&#8217;artista di narrare alcuni estratti postumi dei suoi diari personali.</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Andy Warhol con molta probabilità avrebbe adorato l&#8217;IA. In fondo lui è sempre stato il re indiscusso della pop art. Ha trascorso la maggior parte della sua vita nella cultura del consumo, passando dalle Brillo Boxes, le Campbell’s suop can e alle celebrity serigrafate.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nella serie l’IA viene usata per ricreare la voce di Warhol con il suo accento di Pittsburgh e la sua cadenza inconfondibile, per narrare stralci della sua vita. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Andy Warhol Diaries, prodotto da Ryan Murphy, è un documentario suddiviso in sei episodi che mettono in luce alcuni aspetti della vita dell’artista partendo dalla sua infanzia a Pittsburgh.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Negli episodi vengono toccate anche tutte le epoche successive, evidenziando alcuni momenti che lo hanno portato ad essere un artista  e una celebrità, come quelle che ritraeva e adorava circondarsi. Sebbene Andy Warhol fosse una figura straordinaria, super attiva e prolifica come artista, regista, editore e icona, era estremamente riservato riguardo alla sua vita personale.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Andy Warhol iniziò a scrivere i suoi diari subito dopo essere stato vittima della pistola della scrittrice Valerie Solanas nell’attentato del 1968. La serie espone alcuni temi come la sua sessualità, la sua amicizia con l’artista Jean-Michel Basquiat, il suo rapporto con la chiesa e la fede. Il documentario contiene anche interviste di amici e persone che l’hanno vissuto come John Waters e Rob Lowe.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Prom è il nuovo musical di Netflix diretto dall’insuperabile Ryan Murphy in arrivo l&#8217;11 dicembre.</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ryan Murphy è il nuovo re Mida di <a href="http://www.netflix.com">Netflix</a>, avendo sottoscritto un contratto di 300 milioni di dollari per cinque anni, forse anche per questo il movimento lgbt deve al suo potere prodotti come “Hollywood” o come l’opinabile resurrezione di una pièce ghettizzata negli anni ’70 come “<a href="https://toh-magazine.com/2020/10/perche-vedere-the-boys-in-the-band/">The Boys in The Band</a>”.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ora, Per la serie “cose da vedere a Dicembre su Netflix”, arriva The Prom con un cast stellare e una storia al limite del politically correct.</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Prom è il nuovo musical formato Broadway ispirato a una vera vicenda di discriminazione sessuale accaduta nel 2010 in Mississippi.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">The Prom” è un musical politicamente ipercorretto e detto così non viene voglia a nessuno di vederlo, se non a quella fetta di Gay di mezza età nostalgici che cucinano ascoltando Mina, per intenderci.</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"> Ma a riscattare “The Prom” dalla banalità edificante c’è l’ironia sul “celebrity activism”, cioè sull’impegno civile di certe star a scopo puramente promozionale.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Due celebrità di Broadway, Dee Dee Allen (una sempre in forma e bellissima Meryl Streep) e Barry Glickman (James Corden) sono reduci da una stroncatura che avrei potuto scrivere io di un loro tremendo musical su Eleanor Roosevelt. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dai social spunta però un’occasione per farsi pubblicità: in un paesino bigotto dell’Indiana -Stato conservatore- è in corso una guerra del comitato scolastico contro Emma, studentessa lesbica che al ballo vorrebbe andarci con la sua ragazza. Alla crociata dei liberal&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">(narcisisti) contro i pregiudizi dei ‘bacchettoni bifolchi’ si uniscono anche la ballerina di fila frustrata Angie (Nicole Kidman) e il barman Trend, ex star di una serie tv.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Come spesso accade nei musical, tutto finirà bene e tutto è scontato, perfino la scelta di un’afroamericana come la superlativa Kerry Washington di “Django Unchained” a capeggiare la crociata del Comitato genitori &#8211; insegnanti contro il “ballo omosessuale”.&nbsp;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Grazie a Meryl Streep però l’ironia, specie sul mondo dello spettacolo, è tanta, come le battute che scambia col preside bono e progressista che si dichiara suo fan.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Nicole Kidman balla per modo di dire, un pò come faceva Victoria Beckham quando era nelle Spice Girls e ha l’aria di stare lì solo per ‘fare cartellone’. </h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Al di là del mio pensiero a riguardo, credo che comunque nonostante tutto  abbiamo bisogno di ridere e magari anche di piangere, e quindi il film va visto perché dopotutto, come canta il cast nel finale, “la vita non è un ballo, è dura, perciò divertiamoci finché possiamo”.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Un piccolo banner tra <em>I titoli del momento</em> dell’home-page-marasma di <strong><a href="https://www.netflix.com/it/title/81000365">Netflix</a></strong>: un titolo che non dirà niente a molti, soprattutto i molti nati di recente, che ricalca quella frase di <em>È nata una stella</em> in cui James Mason dice alla sconvolta Judy Garland «you’re singing for yourself and the boys in the band».</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Un film con Spock e Sheldon Cooper che attirerà gli amanti dei cast stellari – ma che è destinato a essere abbandonato dopo mezz’ora di visone, destinato a rimpolpare quella fila di <em>Continua a guardare</em> di cui finalmente, da un po’, ci si può liberare. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Eppure: quel banner comparso dal nulla, quel film atteso in realtà da molti, nasconde cinquant’anni di Storia – cinquantadue anni, per la precisione, di storia di tutti noi: che cercano di essere riassunti nella mezz’ora del backstage <em>The boys in the band: Something personal</em>, pressoché invisibile, sempre sulla stessa piattaforma.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">La Storia comincia al Theatre 4, nella West 54th Street, tra la nona e la decima Strada: era il 14 aprile del 1968, una domenica di Pasqua, quando <em><strong>The boys in the band</strong></em> andava in scena per la prima volta off-Broadway – come si dice per il circuito alternativo alle grandi produzioni.<br>Rimase lì in cartellone per due anni, fino al 6 settembre del 1970, per più di mille repliche. </p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Avrebbe rivisto la luce solo nel ’96, al Lucille Lortel Theater nel Greenwich Village, per un paio di mesi: ma fu il revival del 2018 a portarlo, finalmente, nella più celebre strada newyorkese.</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Il testo era stato scritto da un certo <strong>Mart Crowley</strong>, uno che all’epoca aveva un paio d’anni in più di quelli che ho io adesso: aveva frequentato l’Università Cattolica d’America, si era trasferito a Hollywood per lavorare in qualche produzione televisiva e aveva conosciuto <strong>Natalie Wood</strong> sul set di un film bellissimo che si chiama <em>Splendore nell’erba</em>. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wood lo nominò membro del cosiddetto “Nucleo”, la sua ristretta cerchia di amici che dovevano avere come requisito fondamentale la gentilezza – e lo assunse come suo assistente personale, principalmente per lasciargli il tempo di scrivere questa drammatica commedia che gli avrebbe dato fama nazionale.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">La pièce metteva al centro della trama un gruppo di uomini omosessuali: fatto inaudito e latentemente pericoloso per l’epoca, se consideriamo che non c’erano ancora stati i moti di Stonewall ed era illegale per due maschi ballare insieme: non si poteva neanche <em>parlare</em> di una comunità gay. </h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I nove attori che accettarono d’interpretare i nove personaggi lo fecero allora contro il volere dei propri agenti: sei di loro erano realmente gay – e se avessero fatto coming-out avrebbero messo fine alle proprie carriere; cinque morirono a causa dell’<strong>AIDS</strong> fra il 1984 e il 1993.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">La sceneggiatura rispettava l’unità di luogo e di tempo: (quasi) tutto si svolge durante la <em>festa di compleanno del caro amico Harold</em>, come poi avrebbe titolato la versione cinematografica italiana – uscita nelle nostre sale il 29 ottobre del ’70.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Perché bastarono due anni e lo spettacolo teatrale già approdò sul grande schermo, lasciando a Mart l’onere di adattare lo script alle regole cinematografiche e affidando la macchina da presa a un certo <strong>William Friedkin</strong>, trentacinquenne di Chicago, che nel lustro successivo avrebbe poi fatto incetta di Oscar prima con un film dal titolo <em>Il braccio violento della legge</em> e poi con un altro, <em>L’esorcista</em>. </p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Produttore oltre che autore, Crowley insisté affinché il cast della versione cinematografica non cambiasse rispetto a quella del palco e, per la sua performance nei panni di Michael, <em>caro amico</em> dell’Harold del titolo, <strong>Kenneth Nelson</strong> fu candidato al Golden Globe come miglior attore emergente. </h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Produceva anche Kenneth Utt, che per una triste coincidenza sarebbe poi stato – 23 anni dopo, poco prima di morire per un tumore alle ossa – il produttore di <em><strong>Philadelphia</strong></em>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Per il riscatto si dové quindi aspettare esattamente cinquant’anni, il 30 aprile del 2018, quando il revival andò in scena al Booth Theatre di <strong>Broadway</strong>: gli attori scelti per interpretare i nove ruoli potevano finalmente dichiararsi tutti gay, «orgogliosi <a href="https://toh-magazine.com">uomini gay</a> che interpretano personaggi gay» disse uno di loro, <strong>Andrew Rannells</strong> – peraltro fidanzato con un altro degli attori, tanto sopra quanto sotto al palcoscenico, <strong>Tuc Watkins</strong> – e con cui ha avuto due gemelli.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">L’opera(zione) non poteva sfuggire a uno prolifico e attento come <strong>Ryan Murphy</strong> – attento soprattutto al tema dell’HIV: basti pensare alla presenza di Rock Hudson nella discutibile miniserie <em>Hollywood</em>, oltre che al film già cult <em>The normal heart</em>. </h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Proprio dalla crew di entrambi questi show ha pescato l’uomo a cui commissionare la regia della trasposizione 2020 dei <em>Boys</em> – che pure questa, non a caso, arriva a cinquant’anni di distanza dall’altra.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Si chiama <strong>Joe Mantello</strong>, di anni ne ha quasi cinquanta, nella miniserie era stato Dick Samuels, nel film Mickey Marcus ma soprattutto, a teatro, ha vestito i panni di Louis Ironson, il ragazzo che abbandona Prior Walter in una vera pietra miliare della nostra Storia, <em>Angels in America</em>, per la quale fu candidato anche al Tony Award.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Richiamato a firmare anche questa terza versione della sua sceneggiatura – insieme a un fedelissimo di Ryan Murphy, Ned Martel – Mart Crowley compare nella pellicola in un piccolo cameo che volontariamente avviene nel <strong>Julius’ Bar</strong>, in una delle prime sequenze, una delle pochissime che escono dall’appartamento di Michael e che, forse, sono il punto debole del film.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Il locale – il più antico bar gay di New York City – si trova al 159 di West 10th Street e aprì i battenti nel 1864, ma solo negli anni Cinquanta del secolo successivo ha iniziato a essere fulcro di clientela gay. </h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nel 1966, tre anni prima delle proteste allo <strong>Stonewall Inn</strong> che si trova proprio dietro l’angolo, il Julius’ fu il teatro di una ribellione della Mattachine Society contro i regolamenti discriminatori della New York State Liquor Authority, che proibivano alle aziende di servire bevande alcoliche alle persone LGBTQ. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">La <strong>Mattachine Society</strong> è stata una delle prime organizzazioni americane a battersi per i diritti delle persone omosessuali e la protesta, che i suoi organizzatori soprannominarono argutamente «sip-in», portò i tribunali dello Stato di New York, l’anno successivo, a pronunciarsi contro la pratica della State Liquor Authority. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Il Julius’ quindi non poteva che essere anche uno dei luoghi delle riprese del primo adattamento cinematografico della pièce: ma se Crowley è riuscito a vedere quel film, purtroppo non ha fatto in tempo a vedere quest’altro – dopo aver persino festeggiato l’84esimo compleanno sul set.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>È morto infatti il 7 marzo di quest’anno, lasciandoci in eredità «un promemoria di quanto fosse difficile e doloroso» ha detto <strong>Zachary Quinto</strong>; ma anche di quanto sia necessario continuare a lottare, ancora, sempre, dovunque – aggiungo io.</p>
