<p>Per Deni Horvatić, l’immagine non è un simulacro, ma un’emanazione: qualcosa che continua a vivere, a trasformarsi, a respirare con chi guarda.</p>



<p>In Deni Horvatić, la fotografia è un esercizio di prossimità. I corpi che ritrae—spesso amici, amanti, compagni di vita e di gioco—sono colti in una tensione costante tra abbandono e artificio, tra affetto e distorsione digitale. </p>



<h4>È come se ogni opera cercasse di conservare la temperatura affettiva dell’istante in cui è nata, portando con sé il calore di una cena condivisa, il silenzio complice di uno studio-garage, il pudore non detto di un desiderio.</h4>

<p>Non c’è separazione netta tra arte e vita. Le biografie si mescolano, si ibridano. Gli strumenti tecnologici—scanner, CGI, software di modellazione—non cancellano la materia umana, ma la reinventano. Il corpo diventa linguaggio, superficie su cui si proiettano domande più che risposte. Che cosa resta di noi quando siamo tradotti in pixel? In che modo la carne sopravvive alla forma?</p>



<p>Nella sua Croazia, Deni Horvatić lavora ai margini delle grandi scene, in una piccola città dove tutto si intreccia: la casa, lo studio-garage, gli amici-attori, le cene dopo i set, i ricordi adolescenziali che tornano sotto forma di fantasie visive. </p>



<h4>Eppure è proprio da questo margine che costruisce una poetica radicale: un’arte che non aspira a essere monumento, ma gesto intimo, un’offerta di contatto, di coabitazione emotiva tra chi crea e chi guarda.</h4>



<p>Deni Horvatić non costruisce un mondo alternativo, ma intensifica quello che già esiste. Il suo gesto artistico è simile a quello di chi, in un movimento lieve, fa spazio: all’altro, al desiderio, al dubbio. In un’epoca che produce<a href="https://www.denihorvatic.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> immagini</a> a velocità vertiginosa, Horvatić le rallenta, le ascolta, le rende di nuovo vulnerabili.</p>



<p>Le immagini di Deni Horvatić non chiedono solo di essere guardate, ma di essere&nbsp;<em>abitate</em>—come si abita un ricordo, una carezza, una promessa.</p>

<p><strong>Il tuo lavoro fonde fotografia, CGI e videoarte. C’è un linguaggio con cui ti senti maggiormente in sintonia, oppure la tua ricerca è fondamentalmente incentrata sul dialogo tra questi media?</strong></p>



<p>Quello che amo di più in questo momento è lavorare nella moda, perché mi permette di esprimermi attraverso molteplici media simultaneamente. Il mio lavoro riguarda spesso il dialogo tra di essi—come ogni elemento informa e valorizza gli altri. Trovo che l’interazione tra queste forme non solo ampli le possibilità creative, ma crei e intensifichi anche la tensione all’interno dell’opera finale. Sto esplorando tutto questo nel brand&nbsp;<strong>SSYYNN</strong>, che ha assorbito gran parte del mio tempo e della mia creatività negli ultimi mesi.</p>

<p><strong>Molte delle tue opere esplorano l’interazione tra corpo e tecnologia. Qual è la tua visione sull’impatto dei media digitali nella percezione dell’identità umana?</strong></p>



<p>I media digitali hanno trasformato il modo in cui percepiamo l’identità, noi stessi e gli altri, spesso frammentandola in pezzi. In alcuni dei miei lavori, esploro questa dinamica usando la tecnologia non solo come strumento ma come lente—per mostrare come le macchine “ci vedono”. Per esempio, ho scansionato il corpo umano con il mio telefono, poi abbiamo stampato l’immagine generata dal software su un tessuto e l’abbiamo trasformata in un capo, per riflettere il modo distorto e schiacciato in cui il software interpreta la forma umana. </p>



<h4>Vedo questa frammentazione come qualcosa di inquietante e al tempo stesso affascinante, che stimola una riflessione su come la tecnologia astrae e ricostruisce i nostri corpi.</h4>

<p>Sono anche affascinato dalla tensione tra il digitale e l’artigianato tradizionale—accostando qualcosa di tattile, come un tappeto fatto a mano, a un livello digitale, come un filtro in realtà aumentata. Questi elementi esistono separatamente ma si fondono in un’unica opera. </p>



<h4>Il mio approccio consiste nel creare un terreno di gioco—un invito per il pubblico a divertirsi, ma anche a interrogarsi e osservare come si costruisce la relazione tra ciò che è umano e ciò che è digitale.</h4>

<p><strong>In&nbsp;<em>SCAN</em>&nbsp;hai utilizzato scanner 3D – simili a delle fotocamere – per creare le immagini. Quanto del risultato finale è determinato dal caso e quanto dal controllo intenzionale?</strong></p>



<p>In&nbsp;<em>SCAN</em>, il processo è altamente intenzionale. Costruisco e progetto ogni immagine e composizione in anticipo, assicurandomi che ogni elemento sia presente per una ragione precisa. Anche se il risultato finale può sembrare spontaneo e naturale, questo effetto è un’illusione deliberata. Voglio che lo spettatore percepisca quella spontaneità, anche se in realtà non c’è.</p>

<p><strong>La tua estetica oscilla spesso tra attrazione e inquietudine. Ti senti più attratto dall’idea di sedurre o di turbare chi guarda?</strong></p>



<p>Spesso mi sento attratto dalle mie stesse immagini, e spero che anche gli altri provino la stessa sensazione. Mi interessa evocare una dualità emotiva: piacere e disagio. </p>



<h4>La prospettiva voyeuristica dello spettatore dovrebbe generare un mix di emozioni—attrazione, inquietudine, eccitazione e fascino—che convivono nell’esperienza visiva. </h4>



<p>Anche solo condividere lo stesso spazio fisico del soggetto ritratto in una fotografia crea una connessione intima. Questa tensione è fondamentale.</p>

<p><strong>Hai lavorato a lungo nell’industria della moda, dove le immagini sono attentamente costruite ed estetizzate. In che modo questo approccio influenza la tua pratica artistica?</strong></p>



<p>L’esperienza nella fotografia di moda mi ha fornito competenze tecniche importanti e una comprensione approfondita della costruzione dell’immagine. Tuttavia, nella mia pratica artistica cerco di ridurre al minimo il ritocco e la post-produzione. Questo approccio consente una rappresentazione più cruda e autentica dei soggetti.Il concetto alla base di&nbsp;<em>SCAN</em>&nbsp;è quello di rappresentare una realtà “scansionata” senza interferenze artistiche. </p>



<h4>Ho immaginato un grande scanner su cui non ho alcun controllo rispetto a ciò che cattura. Questo metodo garantisce immagini che mantengano un senso di onestà, immediatezza e intimità con le scene della vita quotidiana.</h4>

<p><strong>Hai esposto in contesti diversi, dalla Croazia alla Germania fino ai Paesi Bassi. Hai notato differenze nella ricezione del tuo lavoro in base al pubblico o al contesto culturale?</strong></p>



<p>Sì, ho notato alcune differenze non solo nella ricezione da parte del pubblico, ma anche negli approcci curatoriali a seconda del contesto culturale. La selezione delle mie opere varia in base al luogo, e questo dà vita a narrazioni diverse all’interno della mia stessa pratica. Mi piace moltissimo vedere come gli altri costruiscono narrazioni partendo dalle mie immagini. Anche i mercati sono piuttosto differenti.</p>

<p><strong>Come descriveresti il tuo universo visivo?</strong></p>



<p>Un mix di iconografia religiosa e pornografia amatoriale, con un’enfasi sull’evocazione di esperienze sensoriali che non hanno a che fare direttamente con la fotografia—soprattutto quelle legate all’olfatto. Mi piacerebbe che le mie stampe avessero una qualità olfattiva, solo guardandole.</p>

<p><strong>Qual è stata la prima immagine che hai creato e che ti ha fatto pensare: “Questo sono io”?</strong></p>



<p>Ricordo perfettamente quel momento. È stato quando ho completato il primo pezzo della serie del letto, con una coppia distesa sotto le lenzuola bianche. Sono ancora ossessionato da quest’opera, ed ero incredibilmente entusiasta quando l’ho finita.</p>

<p><strong>Il corpo maschile è un soggetto ricorrente nel tuo lavoro, spesso esplorato attraverso un’estetica ibrida tra reale e digitale. Cosa ti affascina di questa rappresentazione? È una scelta dettata dall’interesse artistico, da un’esperienza personale, o da entrambe?</strong></p>



<p>Mi affascina il modo in cui costruiamo e presentiamo le nostre identità negli spazi digitali. Direi che il mio lavoro esplora nuove forme di realismo, cercando di catturare il corpo con la massima precisione possibile, anche all’interno di un contesto digitale. In un certo senso, sto cercando di essere un realista.</p>

<p><strong>Ci sono esperienze personali o ricordi d’infanzia che influenzano la tua immaginazione artistica?</strong></p>



<p>Sicuramente esperienze personali, ma non tanto ricordi d’infanzia—piuttosto fantasie adolescenziali, forse. Traggo molta ispirazione dal cinema, perché mi sento attratto da quel linguaggio. Non si tratta di citazioni dirette, è più un modo di riflettere su atmosfere e sensazioni.</p>

<p><strong>C’è un oggetto, un luogo o una persona che compare frequentemente nel tuo lavoro, anche in forme diverse?</strong></p>



<p>Molti dei miei amici appaiono spesso nel mio lavoro. Esploro spesso le dinamiche delle nostre relazioni. Alcuni di loro sono attori, altri amici d&#8217;infanzia—ho un mix particolare di professionisti e non professionisti, il che funziona benissimo per le mie foto. Vivere in una piccola città rende tutto più gestibile: posso collaborare facilmente con i miei amici, che sono disponibili e, per fortuna, ancora entusiasti di partecipare ai miei progetti.</p>

<p><strong>Se non fossi un artista visivo, cosa pensi che faresti?</strong></p>



<p>Oh, non lo so. Ho provato a diventare chimico o biologo, ma non ci sono riuscito. Lavorare in un laboratorio non era così interessante come pensavo, anche se da adolescente ero davvero appassionato. Devo ammettere che non sono sicuro che sarei bravo a fare qualcos’altro. Romanticizzo spesso l’idea di fare lo scrittore e mi piacerebbe saper cantare, ma in entrambi i casi sono davvero negato.</p>



<p><strong>Come vedi l’evoluzione della scena artistica contemporanea in Croazia? Quale pensi sia il tuo ruolo all’interno di essa?</strong></p>



<p>Ci sono tanti artisti e curatori davvero interessanti e stimolanti nella scena artistica croata. Io vivo e lavoro qui, ma la maggior parte delle mie mostre è stata all’estero. Direi che mi sento più accolto e accettato altrove.</p>

<p><strong>Hai dei rituali o delle abitudini quando lavori a un progetto?</strong></p>



<p>Non ho rituali specifici, ma spesso vado con i miei amici a mangiare nel mio ristorante preferito, in campagna, con una bellissima terrazza. Il mio studio si trova in un vecchio garage, e quando giriamo può fare un caldo terribile o essere gelido. È divertente, perché tutti i miei vicini mi hanno aiutato quando lo stavo costruendo. Quindi, andare a cena dopo una giornata di lavoro è sempre molto gratificante.</p>

<p><strong>Immagina te stesso nel futuro: se tra vent’anni guardassi alla tua carriera, qual è la cosa più importante che vorresti aver realizzato?</strong></p>



<p>Non ho idee molto chiare sui miei piani futuri. Al momento sto facendo piccoli passi e mi concentro sui progetti che ho in corso, cercando di fare in modo che riflettano davvero chi sono. Voglio essere orgoglioso di quello che sto facendo ora. Non sono una persona che sogna troppo in grande o fa grandi piani; se fossi più bravo a pianificare, forse starei facendo qualcosa di diverso.</p>
