<p>In <em>New Queer Photography</em>, libro fotografico curato da Benjamin Wolbergs, le periferie sociali occupano finalmente una posizione centrale. I <a href="https://toh-magazine.com/2020/12/richard-kilroy-passione-corpo-maschile-toh-magazine/">corpi</a> queer, solitamente bistrattati, dimenticati o marginalizzati, sono liberi di esprimersi, di essere quello che sono e riappropriarsi degli spazi dovuti. Nel libro, cinquantadue fotografi offrono il proprio sguardo e la propria arte per raccontare i corpi non conformi di una comunità abusata. </p>



<p>Cosa significa essere queer dove l’amore è illegale? Come vivono le coppie omosessuali in Mozambico, nel Sudest asiatico, in America? Chi sono gli Hijras? Come si sopravvive quando il corpo è illegittimo e l’amore incompreso? A tutto questo ci risponde Benjamin Wolbergs.</p>

<h3>New Queer Photography oltre a esporre i corpi nella contemporaneità, scrive la storia del nostro tempo, fotografando la vita ai margini del mondo.</h3>



<p><strong>Ciao Benjamin! <em>New Queer Photography </em>è un almanacco di corpi queer, una mostra di non conformità.Quali sono i criteri che hai utilizzato per scegliere se includere o meno un artista? </strong></p>



<p>Decidere chi e quale immagine doveva essere inserita nel libro è stato un processo molto lungo e difficile. Per me era importante presentare il maggior numero possibile di fotografi diversi, temi importanti e mondi immaginari queer, fidandomi delle mie intuizioni più che di approcci eccessivamente dogmatici. Un focus importante è stato quello sull&#8217;aspetto artistico delle opere. In generale, sono rimasto sbalordito dall&#8217;enorme gamma di temi estetici e mondi visivi diversi, che ho scoperto durante il mio processo di ricerca per questo libro! </p>

<p><strong>Qual è l&#8217;elemento più importante che una fotografia dovrebbe avere per essere inclusa in un libro come questo? </strong></p>



<p>Per me era importante essere toccato specificatamente dal lavoro, indipendentemente dal tema, dal mondo estetico o visivo ne dal fatto che fosse attraversato da rabbia, tristezza, gioia o lussuria. Anche l&#8217;aspetto artistico del lavoro ha giocato un ruolo importante nel scegliere gli artisti e le fotografie per il mio libro. In generale volevo stare il più lontano possibile dalla maggior parte delle altre pubblicazioni di fotografia gay o queer che si concentrano ancora principalmente sugli uomini queer cisgender muscolosi bianchi. Non sopporto più questo tipo di rappresentazione gay e queer nei libri, nelle riviste e nella maggior parte delle pubblicazioni online. Sebbene ci siano anche immagini di persone queer nel mio libro, che corrispondono alla percezione più comune della bellezza e che fanno ovviamente parte dell&#8217;ampio spettro della fotografia queer. Però sono in minoranza nel mio libro rispetto a molti altri media, il che per me è naturale ma anche liberatorio. Trovo il concetto unidimensionale di genere, bellezza, ed estetica sia propagato dai mass media in modo antiquato, noioso e piuttosto tossico. Siamo nel 2020 ed è da tempo necessario apprezzare e celebrare un senso di bellezza più individuale e ideali alternativi di bellezza. </p>

<p><strong>Qual è secondo te l&#8217;errore più comune nella rappresentazione mainstream dei corpi queer? </strong></p>



<p>Penso che sia ancora basato sugli stereotipi, specialmente quando è visto dallo sguardo diretto e ancora non rappresenta l&#8217;ampia varietà che della scena queer. Posso assolutamente fare riferimento a questa affermazione del fotografo olandese Jesse van den Berg che si è recentemente laureato con la sua tesi Reconstructing Queer Intimacy: &#8220;Quando la queerness viene rappresentata dallo sguardo dritto, è spesso basata su stereotipi e mancanza di informazioni &#8216;reali&#8217; e esperienze delle stesse persone queer. Quello che vedo è che lo sguardo fisso spesso raffigura la stranezza con, quello che io chiamo, un effetto &#8220;spettacolo&#8221;. &#8221; In generale non mi fido e ho le mie preoccupazioni riguardo alla comparsa occasionale di corpi queer e non binari nei media mainstream, penso spesso serva più da alibi per darsi uno sguardo progressista e di mentalità aperta o semplicemente per raggiungere un ulteriore gruppo di acquirenti.</p>

<p><strong>La parola <em>queer</em> è un termine generico, include un&#8217;enorme varietà di sfumature legate all&#8217;orientamento sessuale, all&#8217;identità di genere e all&#8217;espressione di genere. Questo libro si propone di offrire una visione completa delle soggettività queer: pensi che sia completamente inclusivo? C&#8217;è qualcuno che hai paura di aver escluso o non rappresentato? </strong></p>



<p>Durante il processo di ideazione continuavano a sorgere diverse domande come: la selezione è sufficientemente diversificata? Mancano posizioni essenziali? È una scelta equilibrata? Sulla maggior parte delle domande, col tempo sono stato in grado di giungere a una conclusione piuttosto soddisfacente, mentre continuavo a vedere e rivedere il mio approccio. Ma ho dovuto ingoiare l&#8217;amara pillola di non riuscire a conquistare più di una dozzina di artisti per il mio progetto. Alcuni di loro hanno rifiutato l&#8217;offerta perché non volevano essere rappresentati nel libro o non si sentivano abbastanza avanzati nel loro sviluppo artistico per pubblicare il loro lavoro, altri purtroppo non hanno risposto. In definitiva, è sempre rischioso produrre un&#8217;antologia di questo tipo, e non tutti saranno d&#8217;accordo con la selezione di fotografi e immagini. È semplicemente impossibile presentare ogni fotografo di talento, ogni posizione artistica, ogni tema e ogni stile estetico in un libro come questo. Alla fine le scelte devono essere fatte sulla base di percezioni, criteri e gusti individuali. Ma ho sempre fatto del mio meglio per presentare il maggior numero possibile di fotografi diversi, temi importanti e mondi immaginari queer. </p>



<p><strong>Tra le fotografie ei progetti inseriti in questo libro, quali sono quelli che ti hanno colpito di più per ciò che rappresentano? </strong></p>



<p>Ci sono così tanti temi e fotografie nel libro che mi hanno profondamente toccato. Un buon esempio sono i ritratti di Robin Hammond. Il suo progetto &#8220;Dove l&#8217;amore è illegale&#8221; presenta persone LGBTQI+ provenienti da paesi in cui l&#8217;amore omosessuale è criminalizzato e può portare a discriminazione, violenza fisica e mentale, imprigionamento, tortura e persino pena capitale. Ma uno sguardo più attento rivela che c&#8217;è una certa ambiguità in gioco anche qui: l&#8217;approccio straordinariamente sensibile del fotografo consente al coraggio e alla forza dei soggetti ritratti di trionfare sulla loro vittimizzazione. Le immagini di Hammond danno loro visibilità e l&#8217;opportunità di raccontare le proprie storie, nonostante i gravi rischi che ciò comporta. </p>
