<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Un volto, una collina, un sentiero percorso centinaia di volte: nel lavoro di Rueben persone e paesaggi condividono lo stesso peso emotivo. I suoi dipinti raramente offrono risposte o rivelazioni definitive.&nbsp;</h4>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Al contrario, ci invitano a entrare in uno spazio più silenzioso, dove la memoria si intreccia all&#8217;osservazione e il desiderio continua a vibrare appena sotto la superficie. Se i primi <a href="https://www.instagram.com/rubenstudio/">lavori</a> di Ruben erano popolati da giovani uomini sospesi tra vulnerabilità e scoperta di sé, oggi quella stessa sensibilità sembra essersi riversata nei paesaggi.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Colline, alberi solitari e sentieri familiari diventano presenze cariche di emozioni, luoghi che raccontano meno una geografia che uno stato d&#8217;animo.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In questa conversazione, Ruben Baghdasaryan riflette sul desiderio, sulla nostalgia, sul mistero e sulle storie che abitano tanto le persone quanto i luoghi. Ne emerge una pratica pittorica che non cerca semplicemente di rappresentare il mondo, ma di trattenere qualcosa di più fragile: un&#8217;atmosfera, una sensazione, un&#8217;emozione destinata a trasformarsi.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Forse, come lui stesso suggerisce, ciò che i suoi dipinti cercano davvero di preservare non sono persone o paesaggi, ma quelle particolari condizioni atmosferiche dell&#8217;anima che attraversano le nostre vite prima di dissolversi.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>I tuoi paesaggi più recenti appaiono sorprendentemente intimi. Pensi di stare ancora dipingendo dei ritratti, solo senza i corpi?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In un certo senso sì. Non credo di aver mai smesso di dipingere persone. La differenza è che ora la presenza umana è implicita anziché visibile. Un sentiero che ho percorso centinaia di volte, un albero solitario o una collina al tramonto possono raccontare una persona tanto quanto un volto. I paesaggi che dipingo sono spesso luoghi che sono diventati parte della mia quotidianità. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mi interessano meno come geografie e più come presenze emotive. In questo senso, sono ritratti di uno stato d’animo.</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Molte delle tue opere precedenti erano incentrate su giovani uomini le cui storie sembravano rivelarsi solo in parte. Cosa può esprimere un paesaggio che un volto non può raccontare?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Un volto può comunicare un’emozione specifica in modo molto diretto, mentre un paesaggio permette una maggiore ambiguità. Può contenere allo stesso tempo solitudine, conforto, nostalgia, speranza e incertezza. Davanti a un paesaggio lo spettatore non osserva la storia di qualcun altro: è invitato a portare nella pittura le proprie esperienze. È proprio questa apertura che mi interessa.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Guardando ai tuoi ritratti, stavi dipingendo persone specifiche o emozioni specifiche che abitavano quelle persone?</strong><br></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Credo che fosse sempre una combinazione delle due cose, ma l’aspetto emotivo era ciò che mi interessava di più. Quando mi sono trasferito negli Stati Uniti conoscevo pochissime persone. Disegnare ritratti è diventato un modo per entrare in contatto con gli altri, iniziare conversazioni e costruire amicizie. Attraverso quelle interazioni ho trovato una comunità e, in seguito, anche i primi riconoscimenti professionali. Guardando indietro, quei ritratti non parlavano soltanto delle persone che dipingevo, ma anche della mia ricerca di connessione, appartenenza e comprensione. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Le emozioni contavano più della somiglianza.</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br><strong>Il tuo lavoro sembra spesso sospeso tra memoria e osservazione. Quanto di ciò che vediamo è reale e quanto è stato riscritto dalla nostalgia?</strong><br><br>La maggior parte dei luoghi che dipingo è reale e osservata direttamente, spesso dipinta dal vero prima di essere ulteriormente sviluppata in studio. Ma la memoria inevitabilmente li trasforma. <br><br>Quando torno su un dipinto, non mi interessa più registrare ogni dettaglio con precisione. Dipingo ciò che è rimasto con me.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">È anche per questo che cerco spesso di completare un dipinto in un’unica sessione, quando possibile. In quel momento il legame emotivo con un luogo o un soggetto è al suo massimo. Il giorno dopo quella sensazione è già cambiata e con essa tendono a cambiare persino le mie scelte cromatiche. In un certo senso, il dipinto diventa la traccia di uno stato emotivo molto preciso. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">La nostalgia entra naturalmente in questo processo di ricordo, perciò il lavoro finisce per esistere in uno spazio intermedio tra osservazione e memoria.</h2>

Lo consideri una forza creativa o qualcosa che ci impedisce di vivere il presente?</strong><br><br>Penso possa essere entrambe le cose. Il desiderio può distrarci da ciò che abbiamo davanti, ma può anche rivelarci ciò che conta davvero. Per me diventa spesso una forza creativa. Molti dipinti nascono dal desiderio di trattenere qualcosa di fugace: una certa luce, un luogo particolare o una sensazione che so non durerà per sempre.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Molti dei tuoi titoli sembrano frammenti di conversazioni, pagine di diario o versi di canzoni. Arrivano prima dell’immagine o ti aiutano a comprenderla dopo?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Quasi sempre dopo. Il dipinto viene prima. Il titolo è di solito il mio tentativo di capire cosa il dipinto stia cercando di dirmi. A volte sembra meno un modo per nominare un’opera e più il completamento di una frase che il dipinto aveva iniziato.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>I tuoi dipinti raramente appaiono drammatici, eppure portano con sé un forte peso emotivo. Cosa ti interessa della quiete come soggetto?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sono sempre stato attratto dai momenti silenziosi. Credo che molte delle esperienze che ci plasmano avvengano senza alcuno spettacolo. Una passeggiata al mattino, stare seduti sotto un albero, un sentiero familiare, un breve momento di solitudine: esperienze del genere possono restare con noi per anni. La pittura mi permette di rallentare quei momenti e concedere loro uno spazio.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Los Angeles appare spesso nel tuo lavoro, ma non è mai la Los Angeles delle cartoline o del cinema. Quale versione della città stai cercando di preservare?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mi interessa la Los Angeles che esiste tra una destinazione e l’altra. I sentieri escursionistici, le colline trascurate, le strade tranquille e quei luoghi che le persone attraversano ogni giorno senza notarli. Essendo arrivato qui da un altro Paese, ho scoperto Los Angeles attraverso l’esplorazione e non attraverso il suo mito.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Le persone nei tuoi ritratti sembrano spesso custodire un segreto. Pensi che il mistero sia qualcosa che costruiamo consapevolmente o qualcosa che portiamo naturalmente dentro di noi?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Credo che il mistero faccia semplicemente parte dell’essere umano. Per quanto possiamo essere aperti, esistono sempre parti di noi che rimangono private o persino sconosciute a noi stessi. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mi interessa quella tensione tra ciò che è visibile e ciò che resta nascosto. È spesso lì che si trovano le storie più interessanti.</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Quando dipingi un luogo, ti interessa di più documentarlo o registrare la sensazione di esserci stato?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Senza dubbio la sensazione di esserci stato. L’accuratezza è importante, ma l’accuratezza emotiva lo è ancora di più. Voglio che chi guarda possa percepire l’atmosfera di un luogo, non semplicemente riconoscerlo. Se quella sensazione sopravvive, allora il dipinto ha raggiunto il suo scopo.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>I tuoi dipinti lasciano spesso spazio allo spettatore per completare la storia. Ti è mai capitato che qualcuno interpretasse un’opera in un modo che ti sembrasse più vero della tua intenzione originaria?</strong><br><br>Sì, e lo trovo sempre affascinante. A volte gli spettatori colgono emozioni o narrazioni di cui io stesso non ero consapevole mentre dipingevo. A quel punto l’arte diventa una collaborazione. Quando un dipinto lascia lo studio, inizia ad appartenere anche a chi lo osserva.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Se i tuoi ritratti e i tuoi paesaggi fossero personaggi alla stessa cena, cosa si direbbero?</strong><br><br>Credo che sarebbero i ritratti a parlare di più. I paesaggi rimarrebbero seduti in silenzio ad ascoltare. E alla fine della serata, probabilmente, i paesaggi conoscerebbero tutti meglio di quanto chiunque possa immaginare.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>I giovani uomini che dipingi sembrano spesso sospesi tra consapevolezza di sé e vulnerabilità. Cosa continua ad attirarti di quel momento particolare?</strong><br><br>È un momento di transizione. Stai iniziando a capire chi sei, ma non sei ancora arrivato del tutto a quella consapevolezza. C’è incertezza, ma anche possibilità. Credo sia un’esperienza profondamente universale, ed è qualcosa che stavo esplorando sia nelle persone che dipingevo sia in me stesso.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Il tuo lavoro raramente appare apertamente romantico, eppure il desiderio sembra sempre affiorare appena sotto la superficie. Pensi che il desiderio possa essere dipinto direttamente o sia visibile solo attraverso l’assenza e la suggestione?</strong><br><br>Per me il desiderio diventa più potente quando è suggerito anziché dichiarato. Le cose che desideriamo si rivelano spesso indirettamente: in ciò che manca, in ciò che ricordiamo o in ciò che resta irrisolto. La suggestione lascia spazio all’immaginazione, ed è spesso nell’immaginazione che il desiderio prende forma.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Molte delle tue figure sembrano sul punto di dirci qualcosa, oppure hanno appena deciso di non farlo. Cosa ti affascina di quello spazio tra la rivelazione e il silenzio?</strong><br><br>Quel momento contiene possibilità. Quando qualcosa viene spiegato completamente, il suo significato tende a fissarsi. Lo spazio tra la rivelazione e il silenzio, invece, rimane aperto. Permette allo spettatore di partecipare alla storia anziché limitarsi a riceverla.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>A volte sembra che tu non stia dipingendo persone o luoghi, ma condizioni atmosferiche emotive. I tuoi dipinti sono un tentativo di preservare uno stato d’animo prima che scompaia?</strong></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Adoro l’espressione “condizioni atmosferiche emotive”. In molti modi è esattamente ciò che cerco di dipingere. </h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Che si tratti di un ritratto o di un paesaggio, sto quasi sempre cercando di preservare qualcosa di intangibile: un umore, un’atmosfera, una sensazione che esiste solo per un breve istante prima di trasformarsi.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Il tempo è fugace, ed è una cosa di cui sono diventato sempre più consapevole. Non possiamo fermarlo né trattenerlo. L’unica cosa su cui abbiamo davvero controllo è ciò che scegliamo di creare e il modo in cui decidiamo di condividerlo con gli altri.<br><br>Per me, dipingere è un modo di rispondere a questa realtà. Se un dipinto riesce a conservare una sensazione ancora per un po’, oppure a ispirare qualcuno a guardare le proprie esperienze da una prospettiva diversa, allora ha compiuto il suo lavoro.</p>
